The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It opened in theaters and on HBO Max today, marking the eighth installment in the Conjuring franchise. But eight movies just isn’t enough for you, is it? No, you’re probably already wondering: Will there be another Conjuring sequel? When does The Conjuring 4 come out? Why hasn’t the neverending stream of content filled the gaping void in my life yet?!
Well, you’re not wrong to expect it. After all, the real-life paranormal investigators that the horror franchise is based on—Ed and Lorraine Warren—have published many more accounts of their supernatural encounters. The material is there! Beyond that, the Conjuring films have a reputation for latching on to a memorable object or villain and creating a whole new spin-off film series around that. Take the Annabelle doll from the first Conjuring, which led to Annabelle (2014), Annabelle: Creation (2017), and Annabelle Comes Home (2019).
Here’s what we know so far about the possibility of The Conjuring 4, as well as other upcoming films in The Conjuring universe.
Will there be another Conjuring sequel? Will there be The Conjuring 4?
There is no official word about The Conjuring 4 from New Line Cinema, The Conjuring creator James Wan, or anyone else. But that certainly doesn’t mean you should count another movie out. So far, The Conjuring franchise has been a huge success for New Line Cinema. It’s very possible that if The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It does well in theaters and on HBO Max, that New Line will want another.
But would Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga be willing to return to the roles of Ed and Lorraine Warren? Farmiga reportedly told Empire that she is on board. “Oh my God, I’d love to [continue],” she said. “It’s interesting, we have to up the fear in each one. Demonology is already so high-pitched and operatic.”
Wilson agreed, and also said he was game. “We constantly want to push these characters. I would like to – for no other reason than I would want to keep playing opposite Vera.”
Will there be more movies in the Conjuring universe?
Probably! However, nothing is set in stone yet. Currently, there are at least two more movies in the Conjuring universe in the works: An untitled sequel to The Nun; and a new spin-off movie called The Crooked Man.
The last we heard about The Nun sequel was in 2019, when screenwriter Akela Cooper (The 100, Luke Cage) signed on to write the script. The film is set to be produced by The Conjuring creator James Wan’s company, Atomic Monster and Peter Safran’s The Safran Company. But no other details have been released.
As for The Crooked Man, it seems that the film—intended a spin-off about the titular character seen in The Conjuring 2—has been languishing in development. In 2018, producer Peter Safran told CinemaBlend, “We’re still working on the script for it. The bar is set very high for the movies that we want to make in The Conjuring Universe, and until we get to that place we’re not interested in putting one of these out there into the universe. I still think The Crooked Man could be a very interesting and different story.”
A year later, Safran told ComicBook.com that The Crooked Man had taken a back seat to The Nun, due to audience interest.
“When we did Conjuring 2, we all thought Crooked Man would be the next one out the gate. We just loved it. It was just a great character. Instead, the audience was so fascinated by the nun,” Safran said. “It was clear that that, in fact, should be the next one. It’s not that we won’t do Crooked Man, but you kind of have to balance out [the franchise]. I’m sure that we have ideas of what we want to do beyond this, from the artifact room, but I suspect that we’ll probably […] The audience will tell us exactly what we should be doing.”
While Safran didn’t say The Crooked Man was not happening, it sounds like it’s not a top priority for the Conjuring franchise at the moment. We’ll just have to wait and see!
