Tragedy hit the college football world Saturday morning as a star running back was found dead in what’s being called an “accidental shooting.”

Utah freshman Ty Jordan, the PAC-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, died of a gunshot wound back home in Texas, ABC 4 in Utah reported.

A preliminary investigation by the Denton Police Department indicated that Jordan shot himself, while KUTV’s Josh Edmonds reported that the gun went off accidentally.

Several teammates took to Twitter Saturday to express their sorrow.

“Rest In Peace Ty. Can’t believe your gone. Grateful our lives crossed paths. You will forever be missed,” quarterback Jake Bentley tweeted.

A four-star recruit out of West Mesquite High School in Texas, Jordan rushed for 597 yards and six touchdowns in five games, while also catching 11 passes for 126 yards.

He was graded as the top running back in the Pac-12 by Pro Football Focus.

The official Twitter account for the Utah football team also mourned Jordan in a post.

“Rest In Peace, #22,” it read. “Forever in our hearts. We love you, Ty.”
