But honey, TikTok made me buy it!
This new excuse for an online shopping addiction is a game-changer. Not only because the bite-size videos are insanely easy to consume, but also because there are millions of recommendations on the app for how to make your life in the kitchen as easy as possible.
The hashtag #tiktokmademebuyit is full of products for every aspect of adulting, from work-from-home hacks to reviews of every aisle at the local dollar store. Specifically looking at the kitchen — where we spend the most of our lives during this pandemic — accounts solely dedicated to this sacred room have exploded in recent months.
The hashtags #kitchentools, #kitchenhacks and #kitchenmusthaves are perfect for beginners just trying to get the basics, plus professional aesthetic A-listers who want a full kitchen makeover.
While some companies are certainly doing the promoting themselves, many roundups and reviews come from customers themselves, giving a 60-second rundown of why they caved to the app’s suggestions and why they’re better off for it.
Here is a quick roundup of some of the kitchen tools you didn’t know you needed, going viral for all the right reasons. Less time in the kitchen means more time to scroll, right?
Messy cabinets full of pots and pans? Or worse, a messy sink full of dirty pots and pans? Trade them in for the Always Pan, recommended by TikTok user @purewow, and liked by more than 105,000 TikTok users. The aesthetically pleasing pink pan is cute, durable and most importantly, multifunctional. The website claims it can replace eight common kitchen tools — the fry pan, saute pan, steamer, skillet, saucier, saucepan, nonstick pan, spatula and spoon rest — and wipes clean after, too.
Our Place, the creator of the cult-kitchen tool, is a company with a mission that goes beyond nonstick cookware. Founded by a team of mostly immigrants, the company also gives back to the community. They partner with charities such as Feeding America, to whom they donated more than 200,000 meals during the pandemic.
“We wanted to create a place that brought people together to celebrate traditions and create new ones,” reads the website’s FAQ page. “We knew we wanted to work with sustainable materials and female artisans. We also knew that whatever we made, it had to make cooking more approachable and less cluttered. Simpler. Because when you have the right tools, cooking at home is beautiful.”
Avocados have been trending for a while, and now they can withstand the test of time, too.
TikTok user @julianna_claire showed off her find with a video featuring the favorite fruit and a Food Hugger: an avo-shaped product designed to keep the second half of the avocado fresh in the fridge without excess plastic storage containers or wrap. Complete with a silicone pit, the sleeve stretches over the avocado and can be reused again and again, as they are dishwasher safe and BPA-free.
The same company also sells circular versions, perfect for tomatoes, cucumbers, which even open cans and jars with stray lids. The Avocado Hugger comes in a pack of two, and the circular Huggers come in packs of two and five. They have a company site directly on Amazon as well.
This tool has already been on the big screen, the TV screen and now on your phone screen, becoming a TikTok sensation with more than 90,000 likes. The Kitchen Safe was posted by user @miriam.gin1, but before that, it was featured on “Shark Tank” and on the new Netflix original “The Social Dilemma.” Whether you want to lock up some tempting snacks, or throw your phone in for a forced screen-time break, this is a foolproof way to do it.
The Kitchen Safe looks like an ordinary clear container, but is actually much smarter. The lid has a timer on top, and once set between one minute and 10 whole days, the box will not open until time is up — even if you remove the batteries! One smart cookie jar, huh?
“Kitchen Safe uses methodology backed by MIT, Princeton, Harvard, Stanford and Yale to turn healthy habits into a lifestyle. Their research shows that precommitment is the ultimate way to beat temptation,” according to the Amazon description.
The container comes in sizes ranging from mini to extra large, which means you can lock away anything from a candy bar to an entire video-game console — whatever your vice may be. They come in a few different colors as well, and are sold on Amazon in the Kitchen Safe e-store.
Since our kiddos are most likely at home for the time being, this TikTok mom is letting hers help out in the kitchen.
@hello_happy_mom found these plastic serrated knives online, and 187,000 others agreed that they are a must-have for kid-safe cooking. The knives look very similar to a lettuce knife, with a scalloped edge that can’t cut through skin but can cut through most fruits and veggies. In the video, the happy mom cuts strawberries with a satisfying chop, before showing how her fingers are cut-free.
These knives can be found in most kitchen supply stores and online retailers. For some fun colors, check out Walmart for a three-pack of purple, green and blue, available online or in-store.
It’s time to take a good, hard look at your kitchen drawers and do some reorganizing.
One of the hardest things to fit snugly are measuring cups, but TikTok user and YouTuber @nicole_thenomad has found a space-saving solution. These measuring cups are fully collapsable, and can be made flat in an instant. Made of BPA-free silicone, the cups are flexible, stackable and more nonstick than traditional metal or plastic utensils.
“If you have something sticky, like peanut butter, that you are trying to get out, you can just turn it over and pop it out!” she describes in the 60-second video.
We found this product all over Amazon, and one even comes with measuring spoons as an added bonus. The set of eight tools comes in rainbow colors, and are all dishwasher safe.
Sorry in advance, but after finding @sulheejessica on TikTok, hours of your time will be absorbed by her insanely adorable videos.
Jessica Woo makes lunches for her kids, but not your ordinary sandwich and chips. Using a bento box (those compartment-style Japanese lunch boxes) she makes bite-size meals for her daughters. One video features a favorite tool, a rice ball maker, and she showed us how easy it is to use. Simply fill the compartments with sticky rice, close it up and shake. After a few seconds, perfectly round rice balls are ready for bento boxes, sushi bowls and more.
When tracking down this product, we found the Aimik Rice Ball Molds from Walmart to be pretty identical, down to the number of compartments and the orange color.
Even as the weather gets colder, the diehard iced-coffee drinkers don’t stop.
TikTok user @_cdshhy shared her Target find with the world and 92,000 others agreed that this product is a must-have for the coffee addicts among us, who want to feed the habit but stay clear of coffee-shop crowds and prices.
The Mr. Coffee brand we all know and love has released a machine specifically for iced coffee, appropriately named the Mr. Coffee Iced. The video walks through how easy it is to use, as all you need to do is fill the machine with water and coffee grounds like you would a regular coffee machine — except this coffee comes out colder than normal and chills quickly over ice.
“The RapidChill brewing process quickly cools hot, concentrated coffee over a full tumbler of ice, ensuring consistently bold, flavorful iced coffee that’s never watered down,” reads the product description.
The company page also claims that by making your coffee at home, users can save up to $800 per year on cafe-related expenses, making the Target price tag taste a lot sweeter. The box comes with the machine and a reusable tumbler with straw so that you can get to sipping straight away.
TikTok user @samanthaelizabeth51 is one of many (312,000 and counting) who are washing dishes with delight, thanks to the app.
The now-famous TikTok sound, “Just Did a Good Thing” by @lucaselvis plays in the background, congratulating those who purchased this productive kitchen hack. The base is a compartment for liquid dish soap, and once filled with the soap of your choice, the cap acts as both a pump and a sponge holder. Press down with the sponge a few times, and your sink full of dirty dishes doesn’t stand a chance.
This frees up counter space where you would normally have a big bottle of soap and a separate sponge holder, and also frees up your slippery hands as, so no more fumbling with a bottle of suds.
The product can be found on Amazon, and is called the S&T INC. Soap Pump Dispenser and Sponge Holder. It comes in both silver and gray to match most kitchen sinks.
No more passive aggressively leaving dishes out because you assumed the dishwasher was clean but couldn’t be bothered to check.
@jessicalynn727 shared her #tiktokmademebuyit moment, taking us from her mailbox to the kitchen when she received her clean and dirty magnet in the mail.
“Now everyone in this house can stop pretending they don’t know if the dishes in the dishwasher are clean or dirty,” she says in the video, dripping with disdain.
We all know this trick, and if you are sick of your kids, spouse or roommates getting away with that excuse, this is for you. The magnetic sign sticks to your dishwasher, and the sliding bar has a green “clean” side and a red “dirty” one. It comes in a stainless steel color to complement most appliances and is easy to remove or reposition. Now, the trick is teaching the family to remember to use the sign itself.
Currently, we are all avoiding touching things that other hands may have had access to. Now we can do that in our own homes as well.
In a TikTok from @evaneramagic, he shows us how to use the trending Innovia automatic paper towel dispenser. Like a lot of motion-activated towels you would find in restrooms, this paper towel dispenser is triggered by a wave of the hand. A few sheets pop out, but the cool part is what happens after you take what you want. Once torn off from the rest of the roll, any remaining sheets are sucked back into the machine to be used next time. This not only avoids waste, but also avoids the wet fingerprints on the whole roll when trying to grab just a few sheets with messy hands.
The brand can be found on Amazon in both gray and white as a countertop appliance. A mountable version is also available for attaching under cabinets for the ultimate space-saving hack.
