The Paley Center — with Citi — is doing a conversation with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, ABC’s “For Life” team, Oscar nominee Ava DuVernay and cast members from OWN’s “Queen Sugar.”
These programs are on Paley Center’s dedicated Verizon Media’s Yahoo Entertainment channel and YouTube. Begun 1976 with Gerald Ford, now celebrated in Ireland, Canada, the UK and the Netherlands, Black History Month honors, among many, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, Muhammad Ali. Jay-Z’s a billionaire. Kanye’s a billionaire, and he wants everyone to know. Tops of 13 black billionaires is Nigeria’s business guy Aliko Dangote. I’m reminded of the Roseanne Barr quote: “I have more money than God, but not as much as Oprah.”
This ‘Land’ is our land
Robin Wright stars in directorial debut “Land,” about misery leading to a cabin alone. Her lone friends being trees. A musical this isn’t.
Robin: “So much tragedy. I feel a pained awareness of those left behind. What happened to them? How did they find their way? This is of one woman’s journey to find her lost self. People fractured by trauma, building bridges.”
Right. With much of mankind stuck home alone 12 months vacuuming, cooking and freezing, it’s just the painful tale to lift us all up.
Word on the street is New York District Attorney Cy Vance won’t run again for New York District Attorney. Democratic candidates are lining up to grab the job. Five of eight maybes said they’ll “defund the police.” So, looks like East Side, West Side, all around the town it’s more stabbings, shootings and stealing for New York, New York — the Big Grapple . . .
Masses racing to plump for Andrew Yang for mayor, pay attention. He ain’t going nowhere. Because of the pandemic? No. Because he’s anemic in terms of NYC’s press corps. Last year he ran — or hobbled — for president of the United States. Nobody examined him big-time because even he knew he wasn’t going anywhere. He got p.r., attention, made speeches and so what? Now, different. New York’s no Iowa cornfield. Forget high-fives. It’s now pointed questions. Like what exactly he’ll do about what. What’s his plan? How will he handle poverty, homelessness, money, taxes, schools, shootings, unfair environment, class discrimination, political difference, race, not for profit, homelessness, traffic, realty, congestion, jails? I hear he might be having second thoughts. Talking of maybe dropping out. He’s now not only facing CV — but also CNN.
Yang no longer thinks this is fun.
Heating up, but not for me
How the country keeps going, who knows? I only know that as I create this staggeringly brilliant column, I am wearing a floor-length winter coat because in my space absolutely no heat’s coming up — none.
But filmmakers, who’ve stopped wearing crash helmets, have a new subject. GameStop. One’s doing the subject for Netflix. Another’s for MGM.If they’re so smart, maybe they can fix my heat.
A HANDYMAN: “Everyone, stop bitching. Just fall in love with whatever you’re doing. That way you can’t wait to get out of bed in the morning — unless, of course, someone’s in bed with you.
”Could be that this is true not only in New York, kids, not only in New York.
