Tatum O’Neal’s reported suicide attempt last month — during which she threatened to jump off the balcony of a home in Los Angeles — is sadly not the first time the “Little Darlings” actress has thought about taking her life.

In her 2001 memoir, “A Paper Life,” O’Neal, 56, recalled seriously considering killing herself when she was only a pre-teen.

O’Neal recalled a 1976 trip with her father Ryan to Europe, where he was set to film “A Bridge Too Far.” Also in attendance on the journey: Melanie Griffith, then 18, whom Tatum met and befriended during a prior trip with her father to the Playboy Mansion, and Ryan’s drug dealer, referred to as “Gavin.”

Tatum writes that she was devastated to discover Griffith in bed with her father during the trip and “felt ready to die, literally. I couldn’t see anything to live for at all.”

Disturbingly — in light of the reported attempt last month — the Oscar winner says that she “stood by the window, imagining what it would be like to jump. The ground below looked very far away. Grabbing a pillow, I threw it out the window as a sort of trial run. As I watched it fall, though, I knew I couldn’t jump. I was too afraid.”

Instead, O’Neal slashed her arms and downed some pills, only to wake up to find “Gavin” molesting her. She writes that when her father saw the condition she was in, he snapped, “You f–king idiot. You’re an embarrassment.”

In mid-September, O’Neal posted an Instagram photo of herself, her father, and her three kids — a scene that marked the group’s first reunion in nearly 20 years, her son Sean said.

The actress, who is divorced from former tennis star John McEnroe, has also battled drug addiction.
