Netflix‘s vast library is both an asset and a challenge. Sure, you’ve got a nearly endless selection of titles at your fingertips, but sometimes all of that variety can be pretty overwhelming. Thankfully, Netflix has come up with a solution for that. The streamer is rolling out Play Something, a new feature that does the choosing for you.
With Play Something, indecisive users are presented with a new movie or TV option to watch next based on their viewing history. While they’ve been testing it for a few months, Netflix is rolling out Play Something globally on TV devices today, and plans to do mobile testing on the feature soon.
You can find Play Something underneath your name in the Netflix profile gate, in the tenth row of your homepage, or as a tab on Netflix menu. Once you’re there, just select Play Something and you’ll be presented with a new movie or show based on what you’ve already watched on Netflix. If you’re not happy with the selection, Netflix has a backup plan. If you select the Play Something Else button, Netflix will come up with a new choice. Selections include a new series or film, a title you’re already viewing, something that’s on your list, or a show or movie you never finished.
“When finding your next story, let the story find you,” Netflix’s Cameron Johnson, Director of Product Innovation, shared in a blog post. “Whether you’re in the mood for a new or familiar favorite, just ‘Play Something’ and let Netflix handle the rest. Easy.”
Johnson added, “There are times when we just don’t want to make decisions. A Friday evening after a long work week. A fridge full of food but nothing jumps out. A family movie night where no one can agree. We’ve all been there. Sometimes you just want to open Netflix and dive right into a new story. That’s why we’ve created Play Something, an exciting new way to kick back and watch.”
Since Netflix began testing out the new feature, reviews have been rolling in from excited users who praised Play Something as “underrated,” “my favorite thing,” and “so important for recommendations.” And now that Play Something is launching for all Netflix users, everyone can enjoy the handy new feature.
