Miss USA contestant hopes to be first Sports Illustrated model with Down Syndrome

A Minnesota woman wants to make waves in the fashion world by becoming the first person with Down Syndrome to be featured in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

Mikayla Holmgren, 26, is already the first woman with the condition to compete in a Miss USA pageant, a feat she accomplished in 2017.

“We tell all our people who have special needs or Down syndrome, go ahead and do it,” Holmgren said in Friday’s episode of “PEOPLE (the TV Show).”

“Just follow your dreams and then do things.”

Holmgren recently submitted her audition tape to Sports Illustrated, but she’s not losing any sleep over the outcome, People said.

“I just wait and see,” she reportedly said, “and fingers crossed.”
