John David Washington is back at it with fantastical car chases and enthralling action sequences. The Tenet star offered a first look at his new Netflix film, Beckett, which is set to follow an American tourist in who uncovers a major European conspiracy. The first clip is jam-packed with action, yelling, intrigue, and mystery — everything Washington handles with ease.
“No one knows where we are,” Beckett’s (Washington) partner, played by Alicia Vikander, whispers in the trailer “It’s really just the trees.”
That’s a sure sign of danger. Beckett then wakes up in a foreign hospital, lost and unsure of his surroundings. His partner has disappeared, and he’s sure he saw people in the stranded hideaway where he was found. He then races around the city, hiding from law enforcement as he attempts to pick apart the political conspiracy responsible for his abducted partner.
The trailer also features a new song by Dev Hynes of Blood Orange — “Born to Be” plays over Washington’s tense action sequences. Although Hynes has worked as a composer on past films like Queen & Slim and Palo Alto, he’s only contributing songs to Beckett.
Washington is sure to cement himself as the next big action star as he takes the lead in Beckett, in the wake of both Tenet and BlacKkKlansman. The actor’s most recent project was actually with Netflix, Malcolm & Marie, Sam Levinson’s pandemic-conceived drama also starring Zendaya.
The rest of the film is just as star-studded, with Academy Award winner Vikander as Washington’s opposing lead. Vicky Krieps, Boyd Holbrook, Daphne Alexander, Panos Koronis, and Yorgos Pirpassopoulos also star in the film. Beckett is directed by Italy’s Ferdinando Cito Filomarino, with a script penned by Kevin A. Rice. Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino is set to produce the film.
Scroll up to watch the first trailer for Beckett, which will land exclusively on Netflix on August 13.
