Henrik Lundqvist announced Monday morning that he will undergo open heart surgery.
Lundqvist, the 38-year-old Rangers legend, says the surgery is for “aortic valve replacement, aortic root and ascending aortic replacement, to be more exact.”
After 15 seasons with the Rangers, the team bought out the final year of Lundqvist’s contract. He signed a one-year deal with the Capitals, but less than two weeks ago he revealed a heart condition will keep him from playing during the upcoming NHL season.
“We all have our mountains to climb,” Lundqvist wrote Monday. “Staying positive here and set on the road to recovery.”
