Bill Maher Implores Dems To Make Amy Coney Barrett’s Catholicism An Issue On HBO’s ‘Real Time’: “Being Nuts Is Relevant”

During the weekly “New Rule” segment of Bill Maher’s Friday night episode of Real Time, the HBO host criticized Amy Coney Barrett and the Catholic Church, claiming that the prospective Supreme Court justice has been “”groomed since birth” to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The left-leaning late night host implored Democrats to make Barrett’s religion an issue, centering his end-of-show monologue on the potential appointee. He joked that he had nothing against Catholics “except my entire upbringing.” Although Maher grew up being introduced to both Catholic and Jewish faiths, he now identifies as an atheist.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats “won’t make Barett’s religion an issue – but they should,” said Maher. “’cause being nuts is relevant.”

If Barrett is confirmed, Maher noted, seven of the court’s nine justices would be Catholics. “If faith is this super-important element of life,” Maher posed to his audience, “shouldn’t we have a greater balance of it on the nation’s highest court?” Maher discussed how the fastest-growing group among those declaring a religious affiliation are “the ‘nones,’” meaning those who do not identify as part of any organized religious group. He then mentioned a statistic that this sector of the country represents 26% of the U.S. population.

Maher also went after Barrett’s comments on climate change, which she claims are just a “controversial” set of scientific findings.

He also insisted that Barrett would absolutely vote to overturn the landmark ruling related to Roe v. Wade, which would make getting an abortion illegal and take away a woman’s right to choose, claiming that it is obvious that she has been purposely picked for her willingness to do so.

“She’s like the Terminator, a robot programmed to fulfill one task,” Maher said, “except she wasn’t sent from the future, she was sent from the past.”

While most Catholics are not “doctrinaire,” Maher said, “there’s another strain of uber-conservative Catholics who have an agenda and an enormous and growing influence to achieve it. It’s really about pining for a return to the Middle Ages, when the church was the state.” U.S. Attorney General William Barr happens to be one of these, he claims.

“These old-school Catholics, they play the long game,” Maher said. “Amy Coney Barrett has been on their radar since forever because she was raised in an extremist Catholic community” called People of Praise. “These are the folks who make Jehovah’s Witnesses say ‘Shhh, don’t open the door!’”

To wrap up his political rant, Maher insisted: “It’s not wrong to call out nuts when sh-t is nuts.”
